The Amenities

The Big Island might be known for its large resorts around Kailua-Kona, but Kohala’s resorts stand among the best, complete with world-class accommodations, fine dining, beautiful beaches, and golf courses.

The Employment

Kohala is largely a sparsely developed area, with small communities popping up throughout the region, predominantly around large resorts or, in Waimea, Parker Ranch. Tourism, hospitality, and retail are major employment sectors.

The Weather

Whether you’re looking for sunny skies and perpetual beach weather or lush green rainforest and verdant valleys, Kohala has something to offer. Rainfall in the area varies from less than 5 inches to over 150 inches!

Come Explore Life in Kohala

Just 20 miles north of Kailua-Kona on the northwest portion of the Big Island lies the tranquil and stunningly beautiful community of Kohala. Nestled into a breathtaking volcanic landscape of black and red lava rocks are verdant oases and some of Hawaii’s most exquisite resort getaways. Kohala is divided into two main districts, South Kohala and the less-populated North Kohala. It encompasses the communities of Halaua, Hawi, and Kapa’au, as well as the dominant Kohala Mountain, oldest of the five major volcanic mountains on the Big Island.

Should I Be Worried About Volcanoes?

Volcano worry? Not much in Kohala. Though it’s home to Kohala Mountain, the volcano is inactive, and the community sits north of other lava flow zones across the island, making it one of the most lava-safe communities on the Big Island.
